The yamas are essentially moral guidelines by which to live with regard to our relationship with ourselves, and the world around us. Non attachment is about increasing mindfulness and awareness that we cannot control things. Keep in mind that non attachment is not indifference, complacence, or rejection of material items. It’s about acceptance.
Non-Attachment or Vairagya is the mental stance of freedom from the colorings of attractions, aversion, fears and false identities that are clouding the true Self. Non-Attachment is one of the two foundation practices of Yoga, along with Abhyasa, which is the practice of doing those actions that lead to a stable state of tranquility. Sutra 1.12 introduces two essential elements of yogic philosophy: abhyasa (persistent effort) and vairagya (non-attachment to the result).

The idea of non attachment never sat well with me. I grow attached to my homes, my home town, the stories in the town, the people, my family, my stories.
Instead, for peace of mind, yoga advises to dedicate our actions and their results to benefit other human beings, animals, and the Earth. That is practicing Non-attachment. I always remember the example of an apple tree which gives its fruits without expecting anything back. In all definitions, it’s important to notice that the underlying burden we carry is our attachment to our expectations. In yoga philosophy, non-attachment is a powerful and important concept that runs counter to human nature in a lot of ways. The idea is we need to put forth effort without attachment to the results of that effort.
